Ambulatory EEG (Prolonged EEG Monitoring)

Ambulatory EEG is a portable, non-invasive test that continuously records the brains electrical activity over a prolonged period. Unlike a routine EEG, the Ambulatory EEG allows you continue in your normal daily activities and environment while monitoring is occurring. This type of EEG provides a greater opportunity to capture abnormal brain activity, or infrequent symptoms that may not occur during a shorter routine test.
An ambulatory EEG may be recommended for patients who:
- Need further investigation of epilepsy and seizure disorders
- Experience unexplained episodes (ie. unusual behaviour, blackouts, confusion, memory loss)
- Require assessment of how a neurological condition is being managed
- Have infrequent symptoms that are unlikely to appear in a routine EEG.
What to except:
1. Electrode Placement
- Our trained technicians will attach small electrodes to your scalp using a safe, medical-grade adhesive
- These electrodes connect to a recorder device that sits in a cross-body pouch.
2. During Your Prolonged Monitoring
- Continue most daily activities as per usual.
- Avoid showering, swimming, or intense physical activities to protect the device.
- Maintain an event diary to record any episodes (dizziness, confusion, seizures, etc.)
- The monitoring continues for several days depending on the referral.
3. After Your Test
- Return to our Inner West Neurology for electrode removal using an adhesive remover.
- Our expert neurologists will analyse the comprehensive data
- We’ll schedule a follow-up consultation to discuss your results and personalised treatment options
