Yes, for Medicare rebates you generally need a referral from a GP or another specialist. Referrals are usually valid for 12 months (or longer for ongoing specialist care).

Your neurologist will take a detailed history, review any previous imaging or tests, and perform a neurological examination. They may request further investigations such as MRI scans, blood tests, or neurophysiology studies.

These tests measure the function of the nervous system and help diagnose conditions affecting brain, nerves, and muscles.

Common tests include:

EEG (electroencephalography) for seizures and epilepsy
Nerve conduction studies (NCS) for suspected nerve disorders
EMG (electromyography) for muscle and nerve disorders
Evoke Potentials (SSEPs) to assess your spine and brain pathway.

A referral from a GP or specialist is required for these tests and medicare rebates.
